4-H Competitions

Crescent 4-H Members Successful at Logan County Events

Over the past couple of weeks, several local 4-H members have competed in competitions held at the Logan County Fairgrounds. The first set of events included Lego Robotics, Design and Construction, and Impressive Dress, which were held on March 25. Adley Bufford and Ridge Garrett placed first in Lego Robotics. Ronni Adams placed first in Design and Construction with both her simple top and simple bottoms. She also received Junior Champion with her simple top. In addition, two students competed in Impressive Dress. Ridge Garrett placed second in school wear and 4-H wear. He was named Reserve Junior Champion with his 4-H wear. Ronni Adams placed third in dress wear as well as 4-H wear.

On April 1, several students competed in the Logan County Bakeshow and Food Showdown. Kinzie Bell placed second with chocolate chip cookies in both the 4-H and Junior Open divisions. Maysen Garrett placed fourth with cinnamon sugar muffins and also entered a chocalote cake with coffee frosting. The Crescent 4-H club had three teams that competed in the Food Showdown. Each team has 40 minutes to prepare a main dish using secret ingredients and a stocked pantry. Ridge Garrett, Sienna Myers, and Ronni Adams placed second in Junior Division. Calen Cox, Maddie Dimmitt, and Maysen Garrett placed first in Intermediate Division. Kinzie Bell and Courtney Prosser placed third in Intermediate Division. Over ten total teams from across Logan County competed this year. First and second place teams have an opportunity to advance to the District Food Showdown, which will be held in Alva on May 26.

Show awards

Crescent Youth Compete at Southwest National Brown Swiss Show

A group of Crescent Youth took their Brown Swiss heifers to the Southwest National Brown Swiss Show in Stillwater, OK. The exhibitors included Breanna Furr, Maysen Garrett, April Christiansen, and Chastidy Scott. At the national shows, youth can exhibit until age 21. There were hundreds of Brown Swiss cattle that were exhibited from multiple states. It was a huge success for Crescent. Placings are as follows:

Breanna Furr- Junior Champion Heifer, 1st place Senior Calf and 3rd place Intermediate

Maysen Garrett- 2nd place Winter Calf and 1st place Junior Showmanship

April Christiansen- 3rd place Senior Yearling

Chastidy Scott- 6th place Winter Calf and 7th place Senior Showmanship

Crescent Show Team- 5th Overall Herdsmanship Award

Breanna Furr bred and raised her Junior Champion heifer, which is quite an accomplishment. Her heifer’s mother was an essay heifer that Breanna won four years ago. In addition, Maysen Garrett’s heifer is an essay heifer that she won last year. The Crescent Dairy Heifer essay program was initially sponsored by the Jerry Allen family. To date, over 10 heifers have been awarded to local 4-H and FFA members. The program is continued through the donation of the first heifer calf born to each essay heifer awarded.
