Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Bay of Naples, about six miles east of Naples, Italy. Today, two million people live in the immediate area around the volcano.
Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in 79 AD that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
