ChemLab #18 - Microwave Ovens and Molecular Motion
Date of Lab:   Score:
Lab Group Members:   This is an individual lab to be done AT HOME.
Problem Statement: Do liquid water and ice react the same way to microwave radiation?
Hypothesis:

Research References:   Lab Key
Experimental Design Observations

Equipment List:
  • 2 small "microwave safe" containers
  • water
  • ice cubes
  • microwave oven
Procedure:
HINT: Set the lab up quickly. Do not let the ice melt before going into the microwave!

  1. Fill one container about half full of tap water.

  2. Fill another container about half full of ice cubes.

  3. Put BOTH in the microwave and heat on high power for two minutes.

  4. Remove and observe. CAUTION: containers may be HOT. Record your observations on the right side of this lab report − BE SPECIFIC about what you observed.

Analysis & Conclusion:   (If your lab observations indicate that liquid water and ice react differently in a microwave, include an explanation of why.)
