Memo to lab groups:
Jim Askew, Facilitator
Tiger Chemistry Class
Crescent High SchoolJerod will be the Director for this project. All questions go through him, and his decisions are final.CRI has asked our lab to analyze and rank three brands of baking powder. As a combined group, brainstorm the following ideas:
Each of your three groups will conduct the analysis of one of the baking powder brands. After the procedures, come together as a combined group to share data and determine your ranking and identify the "best buy".
- How can you use stoichiometry to determine the mass of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in baking powder?
NaHCO3 + HCl + (inert components from baking powder) → NaCl + H2O + CO2 + (inert components from baking powder)
- How can you calculate the amount of HCl needed? (6M HCl is available and excess HCl must be used.)
- Design an experimental procedure to perform the desired analyses. (All three groups will use the same procedure)
- Brands of baking powder used: Calumet $ 1.39/7 oz; Clabber Girl $ 1.19/10 oz; Red Star $ 1.97/10 oz.
- (CO2 is heavier than air and partially soluble in water.)
The combined lab group will submit one typed report including the following:
In order to meet Dr. Meckelsurger's schedule, have the typed report on my desk three days from today. In addition to the typed report, I need each group's Lab Report Guide for our records.
- Initial Working Hypothesis: (Include all hypotheses you plan to test.)
- Initial Working Plan: (Include specific procedures you plan to use.)
- Experimental Data: (Show ALL measurements and calculations from all three groups.)
- Analysis of the Data: (Does the data support your hypothesis? Why? Why not?)
- Modifications: (Did you make any changes to the initial working plan? Why?)
- A Letter of Response: Submit a cover letter, directed to the client, outlining what was done, what was found, and how this addresses the questions proposed by the client.
