1. Obtain a turkey feather from your science facilitator.
 
2. Position the feather on the stage of a microscope. (no slide is needed)
 
3. Observe the hooks and barbules as you slowly pull the barbs of the feather apart.
 
4. Force the barbs apart several times until you know just when the hooks are going to fail.
 
5. Draw the hooks just before they fail when viewed through low power.
 
6. Identify and label the visible feather parts.
 

7. Observe the same process on medium power.
 
8. Draw the hooks just before they fail when viewed through medium power.
 
9. Identify and label the visible feather parts.
