Different substances are used, depending on the surface being tested.

Instead of using ink pads and index cards, today's fingerprinting is done with an electronic reader and data base. This makes fingerprints quickly available around the world.

Frequency of Fingerprint Types:

5% of the population has some type of arch fingerprint.

30-35% of the population has some type of whorl fongerprint.

60-65% of the population has some type of loop fingerprint.

 

The overall fingerprint type is used for general classification only. Actual identification of a person by their fingerprint is done by comparing the details within the print. Those details are shown in this diagram.
