Chloroplast/Mitochondria Model Project

Build a model of either a chloroplast or a mitochondria using materials of your choice.

Your model must be: three-dimensional and large enough for all parts to be seen clearly.

Shapes of structures in your model must resemble actual structures in organelle.

Assignment:

Each student is to build their own model outside of class using scrap material available at home.

Materials may include any objects that have the general shape of the desired organelle structure.

Materials must be non-perishable and appropriate for classroom display.

Project Deadline:

Scoring: Models will score points as follows:

  • 0 points - NO models will be accepted after the project deadline.
  • 30 points - A detailed diagram accompanies the model to act as a key to the parts.
  • 20 points - The model demonstrates pride in workmanship.
  • The following must be shown:
    Chloroplast
    • 10 points - dominant color must be green
    • 10 points - outer membrane
    • 10 points - inner membrane
    • 10 points - thylakoids
    • 10 points - granum (stacks of thylakoids)

      100 points total

    Mitochondria
    • 10 points - dominant color cannot be green
    • 10 points - outer membrane
    • 10 points - inner membrane
    • 10 points - cristae
    • 10 points - matrix
