The symbols in my landscape are the church, the cannon and the trees. The cannon in the picture represents death. It was a major weapon in the Civil War. The trees are rendered in fall colors. This represents the fallen soldiers and the end of the war. The cannon (war) faces away from the church (purity/hope) to symbolize that even though the two cannot be mixed, hope will be sustained after the war is over.

This landscape symbolizes hope and perseverance. It shows that even in chaos and devastation (the burned forest), new life emerges. The mountains in the background represent the strength of a nation that was split, destroyed and reborn.

In this picture, the dead tree represents a life that was lost in the war. The leaves falling from the dead tree represents the spirit of the soldier leaving his body. The clouds represent the woman's clouded mind, being unable to escape the sadness, or the memories of the past with the person who has died. The red of the dress the woman is wearing represents the anguish, the pain, caused by the death of her loved one. The hair hiding her face represents that she tries to hide from the emotion of the situation. The eclipsed moon represents that goodness has been darkened because of the war.

The barbed-wire fence represents the boundaries in the Civil War. The boundaries between the North and South, between slave and free, agriculture and industry. The gray and black in the picture represents the darkness and death of war. The viewpoint in the picture is from the ground looking up. This represents that the country has been knocked down, or sunk to a low point, and has a lot of work to do to rebuild.

My project is entitled "For the Love of a Soldier". It is based on the emotions a wife feels when her husband goes to war. The ring on the woman's hand is a symbol that she is married and the love that she has for the man. Because the tree is big and sturdy it symbolizes the strength and the support the man needs to leave and the woman needs to stay behind. The darkness of the background represents the harsh struggle.

My drawing contains many symbols. I drew two graves of brothers. One of the brothers was in the Union Army and one was in the Confederate Army. The date of the brothers' deaths is the same on both headstones. It is possible that they killed each other. On September 17, 1862, they fought in the Battle of Antietam. It was the bloodiest battle of the US Civil War. The Confederate flag is on the ground because they lost. The Union flag is standing, representing their victory.

My landscape has many symbols. The cotton fields stand for the many slaves who have put blood, sweat and tears into their work there. The beautiful sunset casting down on the cold mountains and distant trees is to show hope for the people who have worked in the bare, prickly fields their entire lives. That era is ending. The abandoned cotton picking bag and basket is to show they're no longer in the fields. The prickly cotton has been abandoned by the enslaved people. To show freedom, I added abandoned shackles.
