Syllabus

Spelling

Each week a new list of spelling words will be given on Monday. Parents may expect to see a list brought home. Lists will consist of 12 words and three bonus words. Tests will be given on Fridays.

Reading

Students will be expected to read orally at home EVERY night except weekends. Grades will be taken from phonic skills, reading comprehension questions, and vocabulary. Students will participate in Accelerated Reader as a non-graded comprehension exercise. Points are awarded and redeemed for prizes and parties as they are earned at each point level. Students need to earn 35 points to be eligible to attend the AR trip at the end of the year.

Math

The mathematics curriculum focuses on the following key ideas: mathematical reasoning, geometry, measurement, number sense, patterns, relations and functions, and probability. Problem solving is seen as the connecting thread throughout all these key ideas. The Saxon Math program is designed for students to complete side A of the worksheets at school and side B at home. All students are expected to place their math worksheets in their take home folder and return it the following day. A homework grade will be given on every five lessons. Your child's math grade will be calculated on homework and assessments. A separate grade will be given on number facts.

Science

Content areas in second grade focus on science process and inquiry, physical science, life science, and earth/space science.

Social Studies

The primary focus for second grade is community. Second graders study the features of neighborhoods and the community in more detail, and are introduced to Oklahoma and the United States with references to the rest of the world. They continue to develop map skills, explore history through familiar events, and examine the basic ways foods and services are exchanged.
